Breakbeat / Dubstep / Neuro

Juliana on decks, Boon Gee on drums. Noongebeat is an annagram of Boon Gee's name. He thinks it's very clever.

How did you guys get together?

We've been friends for years. Musically, we're from different ends of the spectrum. Boon Gee plays jazz drums and rock, blues, bossa and world music type beats. His influences are largely jazz and ol skool rock - the stuff you get in the 70s - 90s. I'm an industrial DnB metal dubstep break beat hip hop kinda girl. Thank f**k that Boon Gee with all his crazy 13/7 time signatures is one of the few "serious" and respected musicians I know that isn't too quick to dismiss electronic. It's really cool that a jazz musician actually digs my 4/4 beats and shake-tha-*ss arrangements. And Boon Gee can actually play an instrument instead of knobs and buttons, so that really helps.

What inspires you to create the songs that you do?

A gut feel, the kind that makes you go ooomph… whoa… the stuff that makes you drop everything you’re doing and just let the moment wash over you.

What do you hope for the audience to imagine or feel when they listen to your songs?

2,000 leagues under the sea, that’s how deep the bass goes; beats that induce spasms; and this feeling where everything mortal, petty and mundane melts away... you get this sense of empowerment… almost like an immortality, and you know that everything’s cool.

Why do you think fellow Singaporeans can relate to your music?

People either go wtf and leave or they stay and go crazy. So they either feel it or they don’t. Whichever way it goes, we know that at the very least, it creates an impact and it elicits reactions. It’s different. No lukewarm, placid audiences when we drop it.

What do you want your audience to take out after watching you perform live?

Life’s short. Don’t hold back. Keep it real.

You've been on a journey with anaki. How have the last 6 months made you feel?

We’ll gush and start waxing lyrical, so we can’t comment.

What are your hopes for Singapore circa 2050?

That everyone can live the dream.
