Before Anything Else
3/4 Filipino, 1/4 Indonesian, 4/4 awesome. Mel on guitar, Juan on vocals, Renaldo on bass and Luel (who loves epok epok) on drums.
How did you guys get together?
We're basically a bunch of guys who love playing music. Each of us has somewhat different tastes so when we came together as a band, the music we play became a combination of the various styles that we take inspiration from. Weirdly enough, the demo that we are putting out very soon has songs that sound incredibly different from each other. We are still in the process of finding the sound of our band, but ultimately, we want it to stand out. Perhaps the best way we could describe our sound now would be angsty lyrics backed with tons of overdrive. Something like early Brand New or Fall Out Boy.
Who are your influences?
Juan likes old school FOB. Mel likes conventional pop punk such as Neck Deep and All Time Low. Renaldo loves melodic hardcore such as Being as an Ocean, La Dispute, and a bit of emo like Sorority Noise. John likes Hard Rock such as Avenged Sevenfold and Rage Against the Machine.
Your roots are kinda different. How do you work together as a band?
Funny you say that; 3 out of 4 members of the band are Filipino! But in all seriousness, we do our best to find a compromise in what we feel is right for the songs we make. We try to blend a bit of everything into one to create something that we feel is unique to us. For instance, the majority of the song lyrics were written by me and Melson, though Renaldo has also contributed his own lyrics to various songs. Whenever Melson or I pitch a new song to the band, we all comment on how we can improve on it. Renaldo tends to help us filter the songs and spot out lyrics that can be improved since he gives very constructive feedback. All in all, if the band likes how the song is going, we're a-okay.
What do you hope for the audience to imagine or feel when they listen to your songs?
We hope for our audience to know that in life, not everything will work out, but it's okay. Stuff happens. More importantly, we want them to know that whatever they're going through, they're not alone.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Singapore?
Fast forward to 2040. Where do you see yourself on the red dot?
"Would you like fries with that?"
Fries with nasi bryani? We'll pass. Mebbe 3 words that describe your band?
Diverse. Angsty. Introspective.
