Coup de Grâce
A female-fronted power metal band from Singapore delivering heavy metal with an eclectic, avant-garde dimension.
Tell us a bit about yourselves and your music.
We are a multi-racial, female-fronted metal band influenced by the likes of Iron Maiden, Nightwish and Iced Earth. Our music ranges from fast-paced galloping rhythms to a symphonic experience, with the aim to redefine power metal by drawing from a wide variety of influences while always retaining its roots. When you put all this together, you get this weird concoction that is Coup de Grâce.
A weird concoction huh? Do your differences ever go molotov? Or you reckon opposites attract?
In our case, opposites do attract. All of us are very different individuals - our hobbies, goals and dreams. But our differences are strengths that each one of us lack as a member in this band. We are able to work together as a band because we respect each other's differences and appreciate the uniqueness that each one of us bring to the band. What we lack in talent, we make up for with hard work. Everyone is talented in their own way and we progress as one because we work hard to become as good as each other. At the end of the day, as a band, we need to complement each other.
You have this thing about "breaking the stereotypes surrounding metal". Care to elaborate?
We want everyone to know that the stereotype surrounding Metal is most certainly untrue. Metal is not noise. Metal is about expression. It is imaginative, which is what you will be able to hear with the differences in riffs in our music, as well as meaningful, especially with its lyrics.
What do you hope for your audience to imagine and feel when they listen to your songs?
We hope our audience will be able to connect with us both musically and lyrically. Metal is not just what most people think - loud, fast-paced and aggressive. It is far beyond just that. It can melodic, written about life and love, with the hope to inspire. When we are up on stage, the adrenaline rush we go through is a roller coaster ride of emotions that we never want to end. This experience we share as a band is an experience we want our audience to imagine and feel.
The metal scene is strong here. What other things do you love about living in Singapore?
Being able to find family in a band with people of different races, religions and backgrounds, and still being able to put our differences together to write, grind and create a whole new craft of our own that is Coup de Grâce. Growing up in Singapore has only made this possible and for us, this is our favourite thing about living here!
Fast forward to 2040. Where do you see yourselves on the red dot?
Swirling in a pool of success, with the realisation that we have fans who are not only metal heads but from all walks of life, and breaking the stereotype of what Metal is. But if that does not happen then it would be wonderful to see people enjoying our music, and probably telling our future children that they should always live their dreams no matter how different they may think they are!
